In the Light

In the Light: A Novel

Mary Lancer lives in a society strictly governed by the repressive laws of Essential Enlightenism. She has never been comfortable with the elite status her green jumpsuit affords her and struggles with feelings of insecurity and self-doubt. As the end of high school nears, she rediscovers a part of herself she had long repressed – prophetic dreams, clairvoyance, telepathy – the gifts her father used before he was killed many years ago. When she falls in love with a Black Suit and marries a Gold Suit she is forced to embark on a quest to change the course of history.

In the Light is the first novel in a trilogy that includes a prequel and a sequel. The story features a strong female heroine struggle to triumph over the repressive regime that wants to destroy her. In the first book, Mary discovers her inner strength and mystical gift when she helps with her mother, Valencia’s quest. The second book, Behind the Shadow, begins eighteen years earlier when Mary’s mother is a teenager. The story of Valencia’s forbidden love of Mary’s father unlocks secrets of the first book. The last book, Out of the Dark, brings the reader back to the future, resuming shortly after In the Light left off.

Reviews - What Readers are Saying

Fantastic piece of young adult fiction!
Wow! I didn't know what to expect when a friend recommended this book to me but after just a few minutes I was hooked! It reminds me a little of The Handmaid's Tale and yet it feels very original. I wish the next book were out already! ~ Kindle Customer

As good as The Hunger Games - a gripping post-apocalyptic thriller!
Wow! Totally enjoyed this fast-paced, gripping speculative fiction thriller! I loved the characters, especially the heroine of the story -- Mary. Reminded me a little of Katniss from "The Hunger Games." Also her strong, intelligent, courageous mother. Love strong women characters. The men were good too; and the shocking twist on romance works well. Finally, some deeply-felt gay characters that gave the story profound texture. The portrait of the dystopian society felt frightening real. Some plot twists took me totally by surprise. I love a book that is unpredictable. Surprise ending too! Now I want to read book 2 . . . hopefully there will be a book 2! Keep 'em coming! Stand aside Margaret Atwood and Suzanne Collins -- J.D. Rader is here! ~ M.J. McDermott

A thoroughly enjoyable read!
Reading J.D. Rader's book was pure pleasure. The heroine is strong, compassionate, ethical, courageous, and wise beyond her years. The 'supporting characters' were each critical for her venture, whether in a supportive or obstructionist role. What struck me time and again was how I would thoroughly lose myself in the book, losing all sense of present time and place. I can well imagine this story in a captivating film! ~ NW READS

I can't wait for a sequel to find out more about these people. I totally recommend this book! ~ TBM
